What’s checked at an MOT
An MOT covers DVSA-regulated safety and emissions checks including:
- Axles, wheels, tyres and suspension
- Body, structure and attachments (including exhaust system, seats and doors)
- Steering
- Brakes
- Brake fluid contamination
- Brake pads warning light
- Fuel system
- Exhaust emissions
- Diesel particulate filter (DPF) for tampering
- Fluid leaks other than coolant and Adblue
- Lights, battery and electrical wiring

- Seatbelts
- Speedometer
- Visibility (wipers, windscreen, mirrors)

Pre-MOT checks
The MOT test checks that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards.
Spending just a few minutes carrying out some pre-MOT checks on the interior and exterior of your car could also save you the additional costs of unnecessary repairs, as well as the extra time lost.
30% of all MOT faults relate to lighting and signalling
- Tyres must have sufficient tread depth, which is minimum 1.6mm
- Tyres must be inflated to the correct pressures
- All lights must be in correct working order
- Windscreen free of major damage
- Windscreen wipers, front and rear, must operate correctly and not be damaged
- Wiper fluid container should not be empty
